Diet

Meyerland Animal Clinic carries a wide variety of specialty diets for your pet's health requirements. Many health problems can be well managed, or even cured, with the appropriate diet, and the correct food for your pet can certainly enhance and lengthen your pet's life.

We see many pets with allergy-like symptoms, primarily having constant, aggravating itchiness. They lick their paws all the time, scratch wherever they can reach, and chew at their back ends. Many times, we find that these pets are suffering from an adverse food reaction, where they are sensitized to a particular protein in their food. We offer several diets specially made with hydrolyzed proteins, that do not incite this type of reaction in your pet. Sometimes just changing to a novel protein diet, one to which your pet has never been exposed, is enough to reduce or even stop these type of symptoms. Your doctor will advise you as to which of these diets might benefit your pet.

Older pets have an increased likelihood of developing chronic kidney disease, where their bodies are unable to properly filter out toxins from their system. You may notice your pet drinking more water than normal, urination more than normal, not eating as well, and losing weight. Lower protein, lower salt diets can help your pet maintain his or her weight, reduce their water consumption and, by reducing the workload on the kidneys, achieve a better quality of life.

Diabetes occurs in dogs and cats, with similar symptoms as in humans. Drinking and urinating more, and eating ravenously but still losing weight are typical symptoms. Low carbohydrate diets (in cats) and higher fiber diets (in dogs) can drastically reduce the need for insulin to control the disease. On the lowest carbohydrate diets, we sometimes will see cats go totally off their insulin altogether.

Pets with chronic diarrhea or especially sensitive stomachs can benefit from our low fat or low residue (fiber) diets. Vomiting regularly and passing foul-smelling gas can quite often be totally stopped with these foods.

Many cats and dogs develop chronic lower urinary tract disease, with frequent and sometimes inappropriate urinations, the development of crystals or stones in their bladders and kidneys and the resultant pain. Several of our diets can reduce or stop these annoying and irritating problems for your pet, and make life more enjoyable for everyone.

Obesity is seen more and more commonly these days. Restrictive calorie diets, measured out daily, along with exercise can make a huge difference in longevity and quality of life for your pet. If your pet has developed arthritis due to this increased weight gain, you can see a significant improvement in their ability to get and move around when proper weight loss is achieved. As you can see, we carry an extensive variety of diets to benefit your pet. Your doctor will always advise you as to which diet may help. Always feel free to ask us about any diet you may hear about.
